Ohakune
In 2017 I designed and created my ceramic studio in Ohakune Ruapehu. Building and using a wood-fired kiln, oil and gas-fired Salt kiln, Electric kiln and various Hikadashi (Raku) kilns.
I draw significant inspiration from Japanese ceramics, particularly the Oribe style, which is known for its avant-garde, deformed vessels and bold abstract patterns. My work is also influenced by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi which celebrates the beauty of imperfection and transience. I hand-mix my own clay and glazes, often using ash and materials from the Ruapehu region. Ceramics from my kilns are used in everyday life and in collections worldwide.
My work stamped with a Japanese stamp that identifies my work.
Translated it means John Kiln
