North Ruapehu

Mark Tyrrell
is the founder and developer of the Waitomo Ruapehu Adventure Highway Art Trail. Professionally, he has been a Graphic Designer / Illustrator and, in later years, a web designer for most of his working life, which made his skills transferable in setting up this project. He moved to Ruapehu from Auckland in 2014 for a country life and to focus more on fine art. Mark has been actively involved promoting art in the local art community as part of a team since arriving.
Over the last 10 years, with other team members, he has set up what he believes are key art infrastructure blocks both for himself and the local art community, working within the Twin Rivers Gallery team to acheive these goals.
Mark noticed the constant stream of cars traveling down State Highway 4 through Taumarunui and realized that with marketing, potentially local artists could attract art customers to stop and visit them rather than having to go to the cities and give away 40-50% commission to city art galleries.
As a team we've set up three key art foundation stones: a community art incubator gallery, a national art competition, and a Waitomo Ruapehu Art Trail. Now we can build on these blocks

team
As a team, we have built two main events: The Ruapehu Art Awards, a biannual art event that will next be held in September 2025. The last time it ran, it attracted 300 artists from across New Zealand as entrants. We hope to grow this event with the ultimate aim of putting North Ruapehu on the map as an art destination.
The Art Trail: the very trail you are currently visiting. Apart from attempting to bring art customers to this location, it is hoped that the increased art activity will encourage other artists to see this as a great location to settle and run their art studios here. Art can revive a suburb or town, so this is the ultimate goal of this endeavor.
